How to find a central heating leak
We recommend enlisting a central heating specialist or plumber to properly assess your boiler and pipework, but there are a few simple checks you can do yourself before they arrive.
- Take a close look at your boiler. If your boiler itself is leaking, you can stop your search and pick up the phone. Lookout for indications of water damage and any pooling of water on the ground beneath it. Remember that pipes leading to and from your boiler can be hot to touch, so take extra care.
- Examine your radiator valves. Radiators are one of those things you rely on but take little notice of. The same goes for radiator valves. Usually found at the bottom corners of your radiator, these valves connect the panel to the pipes below. A faulty or leaking valve can cause water to escape and damage to occur.
- Is there a hole in your radiator? The constant refilling of radiators in a central heating system can lead to corrosion, rust and degradation. As a result, it’s common for pinhole leaks to appear on the panel of a radiator and for water to leak out. You’ll need to be able to turn your heating system on in order to locate the escaping water if the damage isn’t immediately obvious.

Central heating leak FAQs
Dealing with insurance companies can be a frustrating experience, especially when you’re claiming for cover you’ve probably never needed before. We’ve included some of the most common questions regarding central heating water leaks below.
Remember, if you still have a question, you can call us now on 0800 037 7078.
› Can I use a leak sealer to repair the leak myself?
Leak sealers are the equivalent of putting a plaster on a broken arm. You may temporarily protect any superficial damage but the real underlying problem remains. Even the highest quality and most expensive leak sealants found in DIY stores will eventually fail. A professional repair is always the best and most permanent option.
› Should I try bleeding my radiators?
Bleeding your radiators will help to release trapped air and could solve issues with your boiler pressure when a leak isn’t the cause. You’ll need a bleed key to properly bleed your radiators and let the air escape. Remember to put a towel down to capture any water that may also trickle out.
› What happens when a boiler leaks water?
You should always treat a leaking boiler as soon as you become aware of the problem. Boilers contain many sensitive electrical components which are susceptible to water damage and can be expensive to repair. A boiler water leak is often caused by a faulty seal, valve or pipe.
