How to know if you have an internal water leak

Unless water is visibly pouring through your ceiling or dripping from your wall, it can be difficult to even notice a water leak exists in your home. Fortunately, we have a few tips that can help.

  • Have you been surprised by usually high water bills? While it’s common for water usage to fluctuate throughout the year, if you’ve received a bill from your water company that doesn’t seem to reflect your actual usage, it may signal a hidden leak requiring immediate attention.
  • Keep an eye on your water usage. It’s tempting to overlook everything on your water bill except the price, but we highly recommend reviewing your monthly statements or online account to spot any anomalies.
  • Are you experiencing low water pressure? A leak in your home can cause the pressure of your supply to drop, resulting in slower running taps and showers. A noticeable change in water pressure with no wider issue reported by your supplier should be investigated.
  • Have you noticed unusual levels of mould, condensation or smell of damp? The escape of water from broken internal pipes can cause significant areas of damp or mould to develop in your home. We recommend that you urgently investigate the cause of dampness and condensation that you can’t otherwise account for.

If you’d like to check for the source of your suspected leak before you give us a call, we recommend the starting with the following locations in your home.

Pipe water leak home

Your hot water tank and boiler

Leaks present within your boiler or hot water tank should be easy to spot. If nothing is obvious, listen for hissing sounds or look for signs of leakage on the floor below. Check all valves and pipes into the systems for signs of disrepair.

Showers, taps and toilets

Bathrooms and kitchens are prime culprits for internal water leaks purely due to their heavy usage and various moving parts. Leaks is these areas are often detected by the sound of constant dripping, but as we said above, it’s also important to notice changes in water pressure from any regularly used outlet.

In your front or rear garden

Water travels through mains water pipes at high pressure and can cause substantial damage when a hole is created by corrosion, the weather or simple old age. If your garden is showing signs or saturation or subsidence, it could indicate the presence of a leaking mains pipe below the surface.

Your central heating system

Central heating should keep you warm, not get you wet. A frequent loss of boiler pressure is a sign of a leak in your pipework. Use your instincts to follow pipework around radiators to source damp patches on your walls, or even faults on the radiators themselves.

Your roof and ceilings

Water leaks from your ceiling are often the result of broken pipes or a leak in the roof itself. The most common areas for ceiling leaks are below wet areas such as bathrooms and toilets. Leaks in your ceiling are hard to miss, but the damage they can cause is easy to imagine.

Your everyday appliances

Our homes are full of appliances that rely on water. From washing machines to dishwashers, slight changes in positions through vibrations, impact or readjustments can loosen valves and pipes, leading to leaks.

Pipes rarely just burst. The vast majority of escape of water insurance claims are the result of gradual deterioration of relatively minor problems over time.

We highly recommend using a professional plumber to carry out all pipework repair and installation, especially when internal installation requires pipes to be buried within concrete floors and cavities.

Regular inspections of your pipework, your boiler pressure and your central heating system will allow you to notice irregular changes in appearance or performance.

Learn where your stop cocks and isolators are so you’re ready to act in case of a leak. These are usually found under the sink in your kitchen.
